It is very easy to buy prepacked food from outside. Though ingredients has been mentioned on the pack still, we cannot rely on that food every time. That is why most of the parents are recommending homemade baby food these days. Before I explain the recipes, I want you to know a tip. Whatever you are making, try with single ingredient first and prepare only a small quantity. Because in the beginning, you need to observe your baby’s taste and digestion. If you get positive response from your baby, then you can make more and in a modified manner.

Advantages and disadvantages of homemade baby food

When you prepare food for your neonate, you can keep a check on quality and quantity of food your tot is having. You can make a note of his choices and his digestion. According to the mood, you can try different foods too. But for all this you need to put extra effort. Preparing food is time consuming. You have to prepare one more extra dish every day.But at the end of the year you will notice that, your saved pennies have turned to dollars. Also the storage part is a big mess. But trust me, after few days you will be habitual of this, and you will start loving food preparation for your innocent soul. So here are some evergreen and healthy recipes. You can try single ingredient and mixed ingredient recipes both, according to the age, taste and digestion of the baby.

Semolina desert

Semolina increases the feeling of fullness. Along with carbs and proteins, it is an excellent source of magnesium and fiber.

  • Take two tablespoon of semolina and roast it in 1/4 same spoon of pure ghee on low flame.
  • Keep stirring till it release aroma and turns golden.
  • Then add 1.5 cup of milk with 1 tablespoon of sugar.
  • On high flame mix all three well.
  • After one boil, reduce the flame to low and cover the lid.
  • After one or two minute, off the flame, open the lid and check the consistency.
  • Put more sugar or milk if required, but try to add as less sugar as you can.
  • If you feel your 6 months old baby is not comfortable with cow or buffalo milk, then you can substitute it by water.

Dry fruits powder or paste in baby food

Dry fruits are rich source of energy, carbs, protein, fiber and so many nutritious elements. This is also a home remedy for brain development .Make a paste or powder of dry fruits like almond, wall nut, dates, dry dates, fig, cashews, flex seeds and rasin. Use a small amount of that paste or powder in deserts with milk.

Aamla or Indian gooseberry

Aamla is rich in vitamin C, vitamin B, calcium and phosphorus. It is a great immunity booster for kids. According to doctor’s recommendation, 1 year of baby can have aamla, but if you don’t find any kind of reaction, you can add small amount of amla to your 9 -10 months baby’s diet. But it is quite sour in taste that even adults cannot have original aamla. Here are some recipies you can try to modify the aamla into baby food.

1Aamla JuiceWash 3 big gooseberries with salty water, cut and remove the seeds, put the crushed gooseberries in a mixer jar with small 1/2 cup of water, make a smooth and fine paste. Now strain the juice as much as you can in other jar. At this stage add little more water to the mixer jar, shake it well and strain it into the same juice jar. Add 1 tsp of honey and add water if required. Mix it and and have it.
2Aamla JamWash 6 big gooseberries in salty water. If you are making larger amount, then boil the berries first, If you are using only 6 then cut them roughly after washing, remove the seeds and grind them with little amount of water. Now pour aamla paste in a non-stick pan, add 1/2 cup of sugar, a pinch of cinnamon or cardamom powder, 1/2 tsp of lemon juice. Mix it well and switch on the flame. Keep the flame low through out process and keep stirring till the paste becomes little. After getting little thick, off the flame. Don’t wait till a jam like consistency. Jam will become thick after cooling down. Shift the jam in clean jar and store in a fridge. To make it more healthy use brown sugar or jaggery instead of white sugar.
3Aamla RiceBoil 3/4 cup of rice and set aside. In a non-stick pan 1 tsp of pure ghee and low the flame. Add 1/4 tsp of mustard seeds seeds, 1 spring of curry leaves, 1/4 tsp of turmeric, 2 red chilly, 2 green chilly and required salt. Now saute the temper till mustard seeds crack, then add 6 grated gooseberries and 1/4 cup of water, increase the flame to medium, mix well and cover the lid. After 1 minute open the lid and keep stirring till the gooseberry gets cooked nicely. After 2-3 minutes switch of the flame and add boiled rice and mix well.

Raagi or finger millet baby food

Raagi is the most featured ingredient in all kinds of healthy food. It builds strong bones, rich source of iron and calcium, maintain good and bad cholesterol, and an excellent food for growing children. There are so many ways in which ragi can be added to food i.e. raagi porridge, ragi halwa, ragi dosa, ragi idli, ragi cake, ragi chapati, ragi upma , ragi pancake, ragi poori etc But I will explain the ragi porridge here, because this is one of the most healthy and tasty desert I have ever seen. But before that you should know how to make ragi powder.

  • Raagi powder- Wash the raagi properly, remove the water, spread ragi on a clean cloth till it dry. Once it dry, roast it on medium flame till the aroma comes and then off the flame. Allow it to cool and grind it. Keep the powder in an air tight container.
  • Raagi porridge- Add 1 tsp of ghee in a sauce pan and heat it. Once its hot, add 2 tsp of ragi powder and saute about 2 minutes. Then add 1 cup of water and 1/2 cup of milk. Stir the mixture continously. Then add required amount of sugar. Keep stirring till it becomes little thick. Make sure no lumps remain. Off the flame and allow it to cool till room temperature so that your baby can enjoy.

Vegetables puree

If you are making vegetable puree, you can use more then one vegetable, but I would recommend you to go with single vegetable in the beginning. Once your baby feel comfortable with puree, then you can add more veggies to it. I don’t even need to write the benefits of vegetables. Babies from 6 to 12 months can have, purees easily. As the baby grows, you have to change the form of food. Vegetables like carrot, beans, peas, potato, beetroot, broccoli and sweet potato, have same recipe. Just cut the veggies roughly into small pieces and boil in small amount of water, add a pinch of salt. Boil till the water disappears and then mash it. You can use honey with sweet potato. Quantity of veggies and water can be taken by idea.

Fruits as best baby food

There are so many fruits which you cannot give to baby just after grinding like apple, green apple, pear and all the hard fruits. It is very difficult for babies from 6 to 8 months to have these kind of hard fruits. that is why we need to steam the fruit or boil in small amount of water. Method is same as mentioned above. Cut the fruits roughly into small pieces and boil in small amount of water. Add a pinch of salt or honey if required. Mash it and let he baby enjoy yummy fruits. Juices of fruits are also one of the best substitute

Ground fruits

On the contrary, we know so many fruits which becomes edible for small babies only after grinding. You can grind the fruits like, papaya, banana, mango, kiwi, sapota, strawberry etc and make a fine paste. While making a paste you can substitute water with milk. And here the instant healthy desert is ready.

Khichdi of veggies

Khichdi or gullati is a mixture of boiled veggies and rice. Take a small amount of rice (1/4 cup), wash properly. Take small number of veggies like carrot, potato, beans, spinach. Wash and peel the required veggies and cut into small pieces. Boil rice and veggies altogether in required amount of water. Add a pinch of salt or black pepper to taste.

Daal khichdi

As you have prepared veggies khichdi, in the same way you can prepare daal khichdi. But one additional method is there to make it more better. Take a small chopped onion and fry it in 1 tsp of oil, add small amount of ginger garlic paste, salt, 1/4 tsp of turmeric and a roughly chopped tomato. Mix all above well. After 2 minutes add water, rice and daal and cook till boil. You can add chopped veggies too. Add more water to make it smooth and enjoy. If you are using rajma, chick peas or chana daal. Then I would recommend you to boil these separately as these pulses takes more time to get boil.

Mutton or Beef soup as baby food

Soups are easy to prepare, easy to have and easy to digest. You can give this to your small baby in his feeder. Wash the meat and put it in cooker. Add salt, black pepper, tomato, fennel, coriander, mint, curry leaves and water. Close the lid of cooker and boil till the meat tenderise. After boiling meat, open the lid, allow it to cool and strain it in a clean bowl and let everyone enjoy. Big children can have the meat pieces and small baby can have soup. You can add or remove the spices according to your taste.

Mutton or beef khichdi

When you separate meat from water as mentioned above. In that water you can boil some rice for your younger one. So put that soup water in cooker, add required amount of washed rice, salt if required, also add some clean pieces of meat. Close the lid and cook till rice boils. After opening the lid, if the water is left, switch on the flame again and mash the meat pieces properly. Don’t over cook, as you will be giving this to your small baby.

Veggies and daal soup

Well daal and veggies is the best combination for all kind of families. If someone is vegetarian, then this is the best option for him. Just boil required amount of daal and your nutritious veggies like carrot, beans beetroot, potato, broccoli, spinach etc. Use large amount of water and add salt or black pepper according to taste. You can have soup with veggies or without veggies both.

Conclusion

All the above recipes are healthy, but it does’nt mean that your children can have all. Try the recipes and observe your baby or kid if he is enjoying and if the food you made is good for his stomach. If you don’t find any kind of reaction only then you can go with these above. If you are not comfortable with mutton or beef, you can try with chicken. You can add or reduce the amount of spices, salt, sugar or water according to the quantity of food.
